Nancy Gray is a painter of light and landscape whose work celebrates the quiet beauty of water, shadow, and the wide living spaces of the American Southwest. Working primarily in oil and often painting plein air, she creates impressionistic landscapes inspired by the rivers, forests, and mountain trails of Northern New Mexico and the Texas Hill Country.

Derived from hiking, camping, and extended time spent in remote areas of New Mexico, her paintings explore the shifting relationship between light, atmosphere, and place—capturing pristine waters, luminous skies, and the enduring presence of wilderness. Gray is especially drawn to the magic and life-giving force of water in the high desert, and her work reflects both observation and memory, balancing monumental landscapes with intimate moments of stillness and movement.

Gray studied Fine Art at the University of Texas at Austin and has exhibited nationally and internationally, including exhibitions in New York and Florence, Italy. After years immersed in both painting and arts leadership, she returned fully to her studio practice upon relocating to Santa Fe, New Mexico, where the region’s extraordinary light and landscape continue to inspire her evolving body of work.

Today, her paintings seek to offer viewers a sense of reflection, wonder, and reconnection to the natural world.
